DE_COMPOSE - IMAGE ELEMENT/Z

GLITCH IS THE EVENT. PIXEL IS THE ELEMENT

From the 14th to the 25th of Septempber 2020 in Rome and online took place a degree masterclass at Rome University of Fine Art (RUFA).

CONCEPT OF THE MASTERCLASS: We are creative in the digital age and files are everything to us. Regardless of whether they contain data for a single pixel or an entire episode of our favorite series on Netflix, our creations could never exist without digital formats. Studying the behavior of these data when it is “stimulated” through some techniques such as databending or pixelsorting is part of the work of glitch art artists. The manipulation of the data saved, organized and stored in the files allows us to discover the infinite possibilities at our disposal to de-compose an image by altering the structure and the values that will then take shape thanks to the pixels and the value the carry.

STUDENTS @ WORK: Whether we are film makers or a graphic designers, the glitch is an event that sooner or later will happen as an unexpected event on one of our many displays. It is essential to find out how to transform a "failure" into a creative opportunity outside the boxed standard of use by artistically enhancing these out of control pixels and approach the new media with an unconventional mindest.
Our goal will be that. Implement the glitch in the technique, creative process and storytelling of each student. The focus of the glitch art and dirty new media masterclass is precisely the minimum conventional unit of measurement and composition of an image, the pixel.
The pixel will be the supreme superstar of the students's projects. It will be the object of study but also the subject of your creations to be interpreted in a fantastic or conceptual key, and obviously the composition element. Students will each have to create a project (collage, animation, digital sculpture, short film, poster, web page, prototype, photography, illustration ...) that will be able to tell, represent, communicate, implement, adapt the pixel by raising its artistic qualities through glitch art with respect to their subject of study and reference media, but above all in line with their peculiar poetics and personal style.

🦄 THE SHOW IS PART OF LINEA FESTIVAL 2020, A PROJECT BY APULIA CENTER FOR ART AND TECHNOLOGY. https://www.lineafestival.it/

🙏 I LIKE TO THANK CATERINA TOMEO, ROME UNIVERSITY OF FINE ART FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY. https://www.unirufa.it/en/

"In 2560 the world is no longer what we know. There is no death, there are no wars. There are no diseases. In the new digital society only one thing can break the balance. They are evil. They are unpredictable. They must be fought at all costs. They are GLITCHES."

"Data_Breacher_ is a 2D videogame born from the desire to get involved with aunknown software and new glitch art techniques just explored. It is a project that tries to bring glitch art and all its pop and derivations to an unusual and new medium suburban. In fact, the game shares the mechanics of the hugely popular Flappy Bird phenomenon mass culture with over 50 million downloads done as far back as 2014. Explore too elements from cyberpunk culture and computer jargon reworked in a graphic key with pixel art style. In fact, we are talking about a small bot that carries data packets inside a network and a system, avoiding firewalls and blocks. Whether it is a virus or not is to the imagination of those who play it."

CAOSMOSIS - Pixels like atoms

"From water, source of origin of life to the cosmos. If the nature we know and the universe around us are the result of the osmosis between atoms and molecules, so is the digital image with the pixel. The Glitch event is the new Big Bang of virtual reality."

PROJECT : ABSTRACT EYES

"I decided to work with glitches using my paintings, the idea for me was logical and natural, my works are colored and already naturally broken down and in my opinion they perfectly suited the type of work required in the masterclass. The design, static in itself, is brought to life by the glitch, revealing itself in intense colors and plays of light with the pixels. With the video of my choice I tried to take pictures as individually as possible over a period of time restricted (1 minute), I chose to vocalize on the details and on restricted portions of the image such as a close perspective of my main symbols, giving emphasis on burning eyes, nose and mouth."

KOONSTHALLE
REAL VISUAL LUXURY

Co-curated by Domenico Barra and Karina Pálosi

Co-hosted by Unstable.Media's WPG and Altered_Data's WPG

"As an artist, I've always wanted to participate in the dialogue of art with other artists." Jeff Koons

"Here we come, Jeff!" The Other Artists.

This is the the first co-hosted and co-curated show made in White Page Gallery/s.

The Koonsthalle - Real Visual Luxury is not a tribute, neither a celebration, of Jeff Koons and his works.

First of all, the show is an invitation to open a dialogue about the state of the art of the contemporary art world. A world going through a massive update totally influenced by the rise of digital media, above them all the internet, and the cultures springing and spreading from this shape-shifting scenario. A new context where we, digital and new media artists, are a big part of, influencing it with our works, practices, languages, aesthetics. Things are moving on. It is a slow process but it is happening. Digital and new media artists are important and relevant voices in the discourse of contemporary art. Jeff Koons can be seen as the metaphor of the rise and fall of the status quo of contemporary art that, like it or not, has influenced us some how. As stated by Jeff Koons, he always wanted to participate in the dialogue of art with other artists. We are the other artists. Who better than us? The digital artists. The Koonsthalle will then also be a show about contemporary art from a perspective of digital artists working, learning, making in the context of the world wide web. This online exhibition wishes also to be a testimony of the many changements of the art world and the cultures related to art. We are moving towards a new era where the word contemporary itself is assuming a new meaning.

The Koonsthalle is a show. It is a process. It is happening! And it is happening online on the White Page Gallery/s hosted by Unstable.Media's WPG & Altered_Data's WPG.

Machine Renaissance
Digitonica

Digitonica about her works. “I have been making digital 3d art for about a year, and my new wish is to make digital collages based on my materials using my own art and photos. I always test new techniques. I am often inspired by old masters, one of my favorite is Hieronymus Bosch. I have some works in which I try to rethink historical pieces. It can be Renaissance (Machine Renaissance) or middle ages or even god theme (Cyber God). Also, I am really into Japanese art and I think that my own art is some kind of symbiosis of ancient art, Japanese madness and modern aesthetics in an ironic way. In music and in art I try to deconstruct familiar forms to rebuild them into something new. I also work with glitches because it makes some weird and wonderful transformations, helping us to see some objects in completely new ways. So my art is just a game, I play with different forms of the past, future and present and mix it. I don't want to show just "brave new world", cold, blue and refined, full of white buildings and white robots.”

Rudy Paganini (forevermidi.com)

An original SNES’ rom image had been deeply modified in its code and lead close to the point of non-executability, resulting eventually into a pure glitch generator. Creating abstract patterns endlessly, the program rushes in a romantic streben toward the infinite, beyond computations. Any form of audio or game logic had been lost in the process. The modified software went then executed through a console emulator, the video output recorded for the length of this video; no post editing alterations went applied, apart from a slight dimension resizing. Videogames’ modification is a practice adopted by digital artists and, for the most, gamers. On the art side, seminal is the work upon a Nintendo cartridge made by Cory Arcangel & Paper Rad for their Super Mario Movie (2005). Gamers too use to corrupt or modify roms to obtain almost unpredictable visual effects, and to experiment with playability.
