"Creativity is not the measure of your talent but of your freedom".

My name is Domenico Barra, and Naples, where I was born and raised, is a constant source of inspiration—a place of wonder, drama, and undeniable imperfection. It enriched me with beauty and values and its share of "hiccups," thanks to Naples, I embrace imperfection as a core principle.

One of these "hiccups" was my academic path. I unconsciously graduated as a commercial technician and inexplicably found myself studying Business Economics—perhaps the very reason I eventually became a multimedia artist ;)

In my work, I use various technologies, but always in an unconventional way. I strive to do the wrong things in the best possible way; "Do the wrong things the right way" is my artistic creed. I specialise in glitch art, an artistic field where machine malfunctions acquire aesthetic and cultural value through the experimentation of unstable practices and atypical techniques. Since 2017, I've also incorporated Artificial Intelligence into my work. I believe it adds something new, complex, unexpected, stimulating, and undoubtedly interesting, even in its most unsettling forms.

At 19, after my first year of university studying to become a Business Manager, I fled to England, where I lived for eight years. I worked as a waiter, and every shift became also a study in humanities and social sciences. I attended Leeds College of Art and Design, where I finally found my true education calling. Here, I understood what I wanted to dedicate my time to on this planet. Creativity, in all its forms and nuances, has always fascinated me, especially graffiti and urban art, but the project that truly ignited my passion for art was an installation by Peter Greenaway and Saskia Boddeke, "The Children of Uranium," which I saw in Naples. This colossal multimedia installation interprets and narrates the impact of uranium's discovery on our society through characters from politics, science, and art—a theme that, unfortunately, is still relevant today. I've always been interested in social and political issues; for me, art is primarily a political choice, not just a personal existential condition or a survival path; it's a choice of freedom, to manifest myself as a free human.

One of my most profound artistic encounters has been with Surrealism. I consider it the highest achievement of artistic freedom, a true expression of what it means to be an artist because it shattered the rules of imagining and creating art without fear of producing imperfect works or appearing absurd.

In my work, I consistently address issues related to identity and self-awareness, focusing my observations through the lens of new technologies. Navigating the digital landscape with the curious eye of an avid explorer, I critically and provocatively tackle various topics, always aiming to speak my voice with freedom.

A recurring theme is the body and its image, explored through the spectrum of physical experience, from pleasure to pain and struggle. I examine how new media are sculpting a new dimension of the self and the collective, how tech innovations are shaping our relationships with ourselves and others, and what difficulties, but also opportunities, arise from this evolution.

Art has always been a necessity for me, driving me to engage with various artistic territories, including art collectives and art communities. I actively participated with dedication and passion, but I never exclusively tied myself to one group or artistic movement. This choice is always motivated by a single reason: to be a free artist, free to experiment, change, make mistakes, learn, and never lose interest in this imperfect journey through the uncanny valley that is life.

SHORT biO

I am a multimedia artist, and since 2012, I've explored the digital world through its instability, embracing the aesthetic of glitches, pixels, and machine failures. My current work challenges traditional beauty standards, critiquing the influence of the beauty industry, social media, and artificial intelligence in the perception and depiction of the human body. I aim to create art that is both thought-provoking and visually striking while also promoting inclusivity and awareness of the human body in all its forms. Inspired by my personal experience with rheumatoid arthritis, I am also delving into the complexities of the human body, its imperfect nature and its mutations/evolutions.

My works have been featured in prestigious publications, including Flash Art, Motherboard, Hyperallergic, and more. I am honoured to be listed in the second volume publication on art and technology endorsed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Exhibitions at renowned galleries and cultural events worldwide, including DAM Gallery in Berlin, Media Center in New York, the State Hermitage Museum, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, have presented some of my AI and glitch art projects in their metaverse shows. Additionally, I have been invited to present academic talks and lectures at esteemed institutes and universities. In 2016, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago invited me to give a lecture and public talk on piracy practices and the impact of the internet and digital media on the production, distribution, and consumption of NSFW materials, marking their 150th-anniversary celebration. At the MACRO in Rome, I held a lecture about making art with glitches. Notably, I directed the organisation of Italy's first Glitch Art group show, "Tactical Glitches," curated by Rosa Menkman & Nick Briz.

I am actively involved in curatorial projects with Sedition Gallery, Artpoint, CIFRA, and Niio, and have collaborated with the MoCDA Museum, Hard Disk Museum, and The Wrong Biennale. Sharing my knowledge and passion, I held masterclasses on glitch art and dirty new media at Rome University of Fine Art [RUFA]. As the creator of the online art network and community, White Page Gallery/s, I foster connections and facilitate artistic exchange.

I collaborated with Snark.art and OG.Art, two companies specialised in producing and curating groundbreaking digital art projects on the blockchain. We worked with renowned artists Random International, Mat Collishaw, Michael Joo and Danil Krivoruchko and also partnered with Hermitage Museum, Pace Gallery, and Christie's.

WHO'S DOM BARRA aka ALTERED_DATA?
[extended bio]

I am an Italian artist of digital art and dirty new media.

My art aesthetics is to be found in the realm of machine failures where I interpret the glitches in various environments and digital styles strongly influenced by dirty new media & Internet cultures.

The error, the limit, the unexpected, the diversity, the fragility, the imperfection, and the vulnerability, are some of the meanings of the glitch in my works. Departing from these grounds of elaboration, I develop my research and practice on various topics related to temporality, functionality, accessibility, opportunity, and the influence of new technologies, design, and politics, have on human relations in terms of interactions and values, in related human and machine, with a focus on networks, community, intelligence, language, memory, identity and how those contribute in the critical evolution of a new world, society, human, their conception and perception through machines, individuals new self-awareness.

THE TECHNIC

I like to experiment and work with many different media preferring above all the creative misuse of hardware and software to generate images, gifs, videos, and installations. Databending is my preferred glitch art technique for working and approaching digital data and digital matter. This technique consists of altering the data saved within digital file formats forcing the machine to complete non-standard operations aiming at creating glitch artifacts to include in my projects.

WHO IS ALTERED_DATA?

In 2017 I adopted the artist nickname Altered_Data. I chose this name because I strongly identify with my art practice, databending because I evolve in this practice, it's biological. The choice is also supported by the belief that everyday online data alterations are shaping, manipulating, and influencing our identity, but also our behaviour, and thoughts casting our altered persona in the minds of others. We become while we are chased every moment by algorithms on social media "emotional scrollacoaster". I was also born with an immune system disorder, which triggered a series of physical glitches throughout my evolution. Imperfection is coded in my DNA. I was born this way. Altered_Data is for real.

PRESS AND PUBLICATIONS

My works have appeared on various sites and magazines such as Flash Art, Observer, Widewalls, The Creators Project, Motherboard, Bullet Magazine, Hyperallergic, Monopol Magazin, Espoarte, Digicult, Artribune, Exibart, La Stampa, Interartive, Widescreen, Cueva Gallery.

I am listed in the second volume publication about art and technology promoted by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs among the artists influencing the state of the art of the new media art and digital culture scene in Italy. I am also featured in the Exibart volume "222 artisti emergenti su cui investire / 2021", a volume for art collectors.

THE SHOWS

I took part in numerous curatorial projects and my works have been exhibited at the DAM Gallery in Berlin, at the Media Center in New York, at the Galerie Charlot in Paris, at the Digital Art Center in Taipei, online at The Ethereal Aether by the State Hermitage Museum, at the World Intellectual Property Organization [WIPO], at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, at the MediaLAB of the University of Brasilia, online at the Wrong Biennale and with Arebyte, and in many other galleries and cultural art events worldwide, on the internet and the metaverse. I took part in NewHive's project Major Tendons curated by Molly Soda collaborating with US music producer Suicideyear.

COLLABORATIONS

I directed the organization of the first glitch art show in Italy, Tactical Glitches, curated by Rosa Menkman and Nick Briz. I collaborated with the first edition of The Wrong Biennale glitching the logo for the official website of the biennale. I am featured as Mighty Kongbot, together with Italian graphic designer and artist Luigi Console, in the 3D Additivist Cookbook curated by Morehshin Allahyhari and Daniel Rourke with the project “The Anti-Anthropocaliptic Set” to survive the Anthropocalypse. Since October 2018 I have been part of PPPATTERN, a commercial design project by art director Renato Fontana that features some of the most influential creatives of the Italian art scene.

MUSEUM AND ART COLLECTION

Since September 2017 I have been part of the Hard Disk Museum with the project 09|09.

ART GALLERIES

In November 2018 I became part of the Sedition Curated program. My works are also available with Elementum.art, Snark.art, Niio, and my digital art NFTs are on sale on Ethereum and Tezos.

ACADEMIC LECTURES AND TEACHING

I was a visiting artist at SAIC in Chicago in April 2016 for RE:MESH.WWWERK/s series curated by jonCates. The event was part of the 150th year of activities celebration of the world-famous institution where I gave a lecture and a public talk about piracy and pornography, the impact of the internet and digital media on the production, distribution, and consumption of NSFW.

I teach glitch art and dirty new media at RUFA - Rome University of Fine Art with workshops and a two-day course that takes place periodically. The course is coordinated by art historian Caterina Tomeo. In December 2018, I lectured at Museo Macro in Rome, Italy, during the digital art festival Fotonica 2018. The lecture was titled "Glitch_Art - Altering Image Data" where the databending technic I use to create my glitch artworks was applied as a metaphor to address other topics such as memory, obsolescence, vulnerability, surveillance, obfuscation copyright, and data framing glitch art as tactical media and not just an artistic movement and new aesthetic. In April 2019 I took part in the first edition of the LINEA Festival in Ruvo di Puglia, Italy, where I exhibited videos and gif works in the exhibition area and held a talk about Glitch Art Universe, defining glitch art beyond new media and proposing a philosophic and humanist approach to glitches in a matter of art teaching, social integration and reducing the gap between machines and human, presenting my experience working with glitches through the topics of temporality, accessibility, opportunity, and functionality. The same talk was also presented in Napoli, Italy for the DAF Digital Art Festival at the Ex Asilo Filangieri.

ART CURATING

In February 2019 I curated Spamm Philosophy, a video art exhibition event based on the concept of SuPer Art Modern Museum developed by French artist Systaime. The show took place at Mapils Gallery in Napoli, Italy. The show featured works by 32 international artists such as Carla Gannis, Nicole Ruggiero, Clusterduck, Rosa Menkman, Nick Briz, Matteo Zamagni, Render Fruit, Marco Cadioli, Martina Menegon, Miyo Van Stenis, Violette Bule, Haydi Roket, and other artists from various other new media art scenes and cultures. I am the creator and art director of the online project White Page Gallery/s. a distributed and decentralized art network and community.

SOCIAL AWARENESS

2019 started as a very busy year and on the 15th of March, my first solo show took place at Mapils Gallery in Napoli. The show title was The Beautiful Minds, a glitch art show depicting the story of two young autistic twins. This is a very important project for me because these two guys are my cousins, and their story is also my family's story. One more project with a focus on the social matter, beauty, and power, as a means of success wealth, and goodwill, in contrast with ugliness always associated with evil morals and failure. A project for inclusivity and diversity, the redemption of the atypicals. This is DISØRDINARY BƏAUTY 🥀 The thorn sense of beauty. Exploring the collective sense of ugliness and beauty in the biased mind of AI and beyond + a #glitchart collection.
